Dionaea muscipula (Typical)

The Dionaea Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is a plant that requires a substrate free of mineral salts, therefore it needs rain water, being osmosis or distilled. If not, the salt weakens its development in excess. Neither should be fertilized. Do not feed, it hunts for itself. Origin: It grows in North America, Northern Peatlands and South Carolina.

More info

Light and temperature: The Dionaea Muscipula is a temperate climate specie so therefore must be grown outside throughout the year. It can be kept inside as long as special lighting is used. During the winter months this would be preferable for safekeeping, but ONLY if icy weather conditions prevail. It requires daily direct sunlight to properly develop for a minimum of 3 hours, both in winter and summer.

Irrigation: The pot should be placed on top of a bowl or small plate with a couple of inches of water to keep the substrate always damp, but not waterlogged. It should be given a water break once per week approx.

Soil: White peat should be used WITHOUT COMPOST (it can be found in our store). Do not use universal peat or universal compost as the plant would die within months. It is advisable to mix the peat with perlite/vermiculiteor quartz sand to provide a less compact substrate, whereby roots would develop much better, encouraging the plant growth. The recommended substrate to use should be a mixture of peat moss with perlite or silica sand or vermiculiteat a ratio of 2:1 or 1.1.
